Trying to control my dry hair, I treated my scalp with olive oil before washing it. Worried that the oil might leave an odor, I washed my hair several times. That night when I went to bed, I leaned over to my husband and asked, "Do I smell like olive oil?" "No," he said, sniffing me. "Do I smell like Popeye?"

Death of Nancy Kerrigan's father ruled a homicide

The medical examiner has ruled that the death of Daniel Kerrigan, the father of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, was a homicide, the Middlesex County district attorney's office said Tuesday.

The skater's brother, Mark, was arraigned in January on assault and battery charges in an incident involving his father, but the district attorney's office would not say if other charges might be filed against the younger Kerrigan in light of the medical examiner's finding.

Daniel Kerrigan, 70, died January 2… Continue

Reincarnation the gimmick in lifeless crime drama

Reincarnation, once largely the province of Hindus and Shirley MacLaine, collides with the world of crime procedurals in "Past Life," which premieres on Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST/PST.

In this Fox series from David Hudgins, murders are solved through the recollection of memory fragments of a past that occurred before birth.

Far-fetched? Very. So much so that Hudgins and the writers need to include at least one scene in each episode to allay most viewers' obvious doubts, and they do.

Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt are suing tabloid over breakup story

Game on! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are taking legal action against the British tabloid News of the World for its story last month that alleged the couple were working out details of a split.

"The News of the World has failed to meet our clients' reasonable demands for a retraction of and apology for these false and intrusive allegations which have now been widely republished by mainstream news outlets," a lawyer working for the couple in London said in a statement. "We have advised them to b… Continue

ABC's `Modern Family' a freshman hit

A young man arrived at Ty Burrell's hotel room to stock the minibar and immediately recognized the co-star of the ABC comedy "Modern Family."

He loved the show.

Thanks, Burrell replied. The man went on to quietly describe how his family gathered each week to watch "Modern Family" together, and because of those group viewings, he was getting to know his younger siblings better.

"I know we're not curing cancer," said Burrell, who portrays the earnest goofball dad Phil Dunph

Wyclef keeps Haiti in his heart amid Super Bowl

The contrasts are stark: As Haiti grapples with chaos, death and despair after last month's earthquake, the world's most famous VIPs party in luxurious fashion in preparation for a football game.

Wyclef Jean — who has been an advocate for his native Haiti since the disaster — was in Miami for those celebrations this week, and understands that the festivities won't stop because of Haiti's pain. But he said he's partying with a purpose.

"(The) Super Bowl is Super Bowl. Super Bowl

Powerful snowstorm hits U.S. East Coast

A powerful storm slammed the U.S. mid-Atlantic on Friday, threatening record snowfall in a region heavily dependent on home heating oil and natural gas supplies.

Forecasts calling for 20 to 30 inches (50 to 76 cm) of snow and near-blizzard conditions from Virginia to southern New Jersey prompted U.S. government offices in the Washington area to close their doors four hours early.

President Barack Obama, who previously has made fun of the reaction in Washington to small amounts of snow, was not… Continue

6.0 quake rattles North Coast

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the North Coast today in the area where a stronger temblor hit last month, but so far there are no reports of injuries or damage.

The quake hit at 12:20 p.m. and was centered about 30 miles offshore, northwest of the small town of Petrolia in Humboldt County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Residents said they could feel the shaker, but it was nowhere near as disconcerting as the magnitude 6.5 quake that struck the region Jan. 9.

That quake was center… Continue

'Lost' recap: What's Your Worldview?

Two, two, two shows in one! The two-hour season premiere of Lost, with its dual tracks of parallel world yarns, was a twin-patty, double-pounder factory burger of story, slathered with saucy ideas, drippy with messy emotions, and chewy with mystery meat. It was a delicious meal for this ravenous eight months-starved Lost fan, and while it wasn't easy to digest (check that: I'm still digesting it), I felt properly served. Where to start? Should I sketch how the premiere was an elaborate metaphori… Continue
